The Teacher at the King's Court: Saint Frumentius of Aksum
October 27 · Feast of St. Frumentius · 4th-century Aksum
October 27 is the Catholic feast of Saint Frumentius. In the 300s he was brought as a young captive from Tyre to the royal court of Aksum (in today's Ethiopia and Eritrea). Through patient teaching and charitable kindness he earned the court's trust and instructed Prince Ezana. Bishop Athanasius of Alexandria later made him Aksum's first bishop, and King Ezana became one of the first rulers to embrace Christianity, opening the Horn of Africa to the Gospel. Faithful teaching and charitable love helped Christianity take root and spread—a gift the Church still celebrates.
