Constantine Enters Rome Under the Sign of Christ
October 29, 312 · Constantine entered Rome under the Chi-Rho
On October 29, 312, the day after his victory at the Milvian Bridge, Constantine entered Rome. Before the battle he had placed the Chi-Rho, the first two Greek letters of Christ's name, on his soldiers' shields. Within months the Edict of Milan let Christians worship openly, and churches rose where believers had once met in secret. For three centuries Christians had taught, prayed, and cared for the sick and poor, even under persecution. Faithful witness, kept up patiently, can change a whole civilization.
