The Earl of Sandwich and History's Handiest Meal
November 3 · National Sandwich Day
November 3 is National Sandwich Day, named for John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich — born in 1718, about 308 years ago. He was the busy First Lord of the Admiralty who backed Captain Cook's Pacific voyages (Cook later named the Sandwich Islands after him). Legend says he asked for meat between bread so he could keep at cards without a fork; his biographer thinks he more likely ate at his desk. People had stacked bread and fillings long before, but his name made the habit famous. A simple fix for an everyday problem can last for centuries. Plus, everyone loves sandwiches.
