Why We Call It Hallowe'en

October 31 · All Hallows' Eve, the night before All Saints' Day

The word Halloween comes from a shortening of All Hallows' Eve. Halloween has its roots in Catholic tradition: "Hallow" means holy, and All Hallows' Eve is the night before All Saints' Day, when the Church honors all the saints in heaven. Pope Gregory III set that feast on November 1 in Rome long ago, and the vigil kept the evening before. Lanterns, costumes, and treats grew up around that holy eve — enjoy them, and remember the name still points to All Saints.
