The Night Martians "Invaded" the Radio
October 30, 1938 · Orson Welles's War of the Worlds radio broadcast
The night before Halloween in 1938, Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre turned H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds into fake radio news bulletins about Martians landing in New Jersey. Some listeners who tuned in late thought an invasion was real, and newspapers the next day made the scare sound far bigger than it was. Media can make a story feel true even when it isn't. Don't assume what media tells you is true — check the source before you believe it.
