Vin Fiz Lands in Pasadena
November 5 · Tournament Park, 1911
On November 5, 1911, 115 years ago, Calbraith "Cal" Rodgers landed the Vin Fiz at Tournament Park in Pasadena — the first airplane flight across the United States. He had left Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17 in a Wright EX biplane named for a grape soda sponsor. The trip took 49 days, with dozens of landings and more than a dozen crashes; he missed the Hearst prize deadline but kept going. About 20,000 people watched him spiral down at 4:04 p.m. Finishing matters more than winning the prize.
